What is PBC?

Perth Blokart Club (PBC) is a group of individuals and families with a passion for land sailing & Blokart Performance and Production class land yachts. PBC is a not-for-profit, incorporated, sports club and get supports by annual membership fees, community grant programs and a few days each year, members role up their sleeves to raise funds.

PBC is a member of the Australian Blokart Association (ABA) and is guided by the International Blokart Racing Association (IBRA).

Our calendar, released annually, consists primarily of Saturdays and is set over the Summer Season between November & April each year. There is a mix of social and racing days as all members like to sail for fun and some race competitively at a club level. But on a national and global scale, some attend events held by other clubs too.

Who can sail?

If you keep looking Blokart up and down, you should probably come and see us. Bring the family or your mates because they may like it too. Blokarts creator, Paul Beckett, has named the smile that appears when sailing as the “Blokart Grin”.

Nearly anyone can sail. From Teens to Retirees. And if someone isn’t able to sail themselves, they too can share the Blokart Grin and experience land sailing as a passenger alongside with a Blokart Shadow Seat.

Racing members are also of all ages and levels of ability. Since there is no qualifying, you’ll get familiar with the IBRA (International Blokart Racing Association) sailing rules as you go and other members can assist you with understanding these rules and racing the courses.

Where do we sail?

LAKE WALYUNGUP: Our home location for the Summer Season. As this Lake is a nature reserve, access is limited to maintain the site, commonly open inside the months of November to April. To find us at Lake Walyungup, check our calendar and contact us for a visit.

LAKE LEFROY: Events are held in Kambalda annually with the Lake Lefroy Land Sailing Club. Visit th land sailing events forum on Seabreeze.com.au for events across Australia.

EXPLORATION: We’re always looking for the next big location to sail, especially in the Winter months. If you know of a spot with a good surface, plenty of wind and drivable from Perth, we’d gladly test it.

A little about Blokart

In 2000, out of Papamoa, New Zealand, a new hi-tech 1-design class of land yacht was launched in response to making the sport more accessible to a broader demographic. The Blokart land yacht packs down into a car boot and is able to sail on much smaller areas than the traditional land yachts of the past.

Blokarts weigh 30kgs and use a range of sails up to 5.5m2. Blokarts are recognised internationally as a single design class which has two divisions. The Production division is an ‘out of the box’ standard and is the affordable entry to the sport. The Performance division has additional performance enhancing equipment including a carbon fibre mast and a pod (cover).

Over 12,000 Blokarts have been sold around the world and the sport continues to grow in popularity. The sport is not physically demanding and sailing experience is not required to be up and running. The challenges are the skills of sailing and the rewards are the exhilaration of speed.

The sailing spectacle includes tight knit racing and sailing skills that optimise wind and speed.

In typical Perth winds, speeds can easily reach 65kph.

Perfect Time,
Every Time

In 2014 and growing in numbers, Perth Blokart Club purchased a Timing System for its Members to eliminate the need for paper-based scoring. The concept of electronic timing was successfully proven earlier in 2014 at the Blokart World Championships, hosted in Perth, with 100+ Blokarts from around the globe competing over 10 days.

For our Club race days, Sailors use a transponder positioned on the Keel Tube to automatically record their lap times down to 1/100th of second. This was put to the test in 2015 for the WA Land Sailing Titles including competitors racing 5.6m Mini Land Yachts.

Transponders can be hired or purchased from the club for its events and results are posted on the Perth Blokart Club News & Facebook pages.
